Pass the Salt, Please!

We all know that too much salt can be unhealthy, however it can bring new life into your crafting! So pull out the salt from your kitchen cabinet and try something new!

When you add the salt to the watercolors it literally "sucks-up" the medium/colors and leaves random highlights and even a few "bleached" spots. Just remember that there are many factors that can drastically affect your results, such as
amount of water used
color and quantity of medium
cardstock type
quantity and type of salt used

Some papers, such as glossy, may respond differently to this technique. I highly recommend that you try a few times to see what paper and mediums yield the results you desire.

So let’s get this party started!!!!

Supply List
Watercolor Paint
Paint Brush
Misting Bottle
Water
Cardstock

Step One
Randomly, yet boldly, color your cardstock with watercolors.

In this example I am using Twinkling H20's (French Lilac, Lemondrop, & Apple Blossom) I have used two different types of white papers, one matte (left) and one gloss (right), so that you can see how the *same* colors will react on different types of papers.

Step Two
Mist lightly on painted surface ... only moisten.

Something I learned was that you will need a super fine mister (and I’m not talking about a man either!). Your results will drastically change depending on the size of the spray. Old body spray bottles usually work great to give a fine mist.

Step Three
Sprinkle on salt in a random fashion until you have covered your desired area. Try to avoid piling it on in any certain area.

The course salt (like pretzel salt) is what I used on my examples. I didn’t have any coarse salt, but I did have pretzels. I shook some of the salt from the bottom of the bag and used it making sure not to use any little pretzel pieces by accident.

Step Four
Again, lightly mist with water and leave to sit, overnight is best.

Mine set for 2 hours, and I re-moistened once!

Step Five
Brush off dried salt using fingertips and buff with an old kitchen towel or paper towel. You may experience some bumpiness or knobbly paper depending on amounts of water used. Some of this can be removed during the buffing process.

I highly suggest using a kitchen towel because the paper towel has a tendency to shred when being rubbed across the coarse salt. I personally liked the bumpiness, it added character to the paper, giving it a distressed look. If you have areas that are not to your liking you can cover them with embellishments or cut them away when possible.

In an effort to pull a project together, I made this card (took about 5 minutes using only scraps) and posted just as an example. Wish it looked a little nicer, but it might help you see how I used the piece of finished paper. Note, in my card I used the cardstock (not the glossy) because I liked the look it produced better.

We'll here it goes....

inside reads ".... has sprung!"

HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS MONTH'S TECHNIQUE ... IF YOU HAVE ANY TECHNIQUES THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO LEARN, SEND ME A PM .... MAYBE YOUR TECHNIQUE WILL BE NEXT MONTHS!!!

AS ALWAYS .... HAVE FUN!
